Another Carputer install

This time it's on a 2003 Mazda Miata

A few pictures

This is where I removed the head unit. Since this miata did not come form the factory with a head unit, as you can see, the one they installed also came with the wire adapter. That's great for me, and will allow hook up on the adapter not having to splice into the factory radio harness.  Oh boy, where do I start...

Ok, wires look a little better. Now the radio. It's a d-link fm usb tuner. Not sure how it's going to work yet since I had to modify the radio antenna plug to a rca plug. "Radio shack, where are you!! "

Oh, you can see where I did some sanding on this area. The screen now just pops in and feels real snug!

Here is one bracket under the dash behind the glove box.

This is a shot on the passenger You are looking under the glove box and it's here where the computer will be installed

Does everyone get this messy with a computer install? Note three brackets on the bottom right of picture. Yea, they don't look that great but they will work just fine...

This is where I lived for 2 months

Slight mods done to the glove box. I will be keeping the computer behind the box but as you see I had to do some cutting. The side to the right will house the power supply. Notice near the bottom left. that is where the power supply on switch is located.

Here is a Shot of the console taken out. It was removed to aid in running wires to the amp.

This is behind the passenger seat. Nice small 300 watt amp. The fuse distribution box is just about as big. The amp works just fine. Not loud as you find in a crazy sub system but works great for the door speakers..

This is the CNX P1900 power supply. This thing is tricked out with a tank circuit, 3 sec delay turning on the amp, secondary supply for the monitor and has a shutdown controller as well. Oh, and the P4 boards now require 19 volts and it does that very well...

The big beast! P4 3.0Gig with a Gig of memory. Ect, ect. ect...

Update... (March 2006)
I had this rattle that was really getting to me. You can see I was trying to ensure there was no rattles on my brackets, although I still had one. It was nasty. always there at low rpm. I looked all over and couldn't put my finger on it. You see, this rattle was coming from the inside of the computer. Note to make here is ensure before you mount your computer, ensure there is no inside rattles. On my computer, the power supply and fan holder was touching the inside top of the case. Some soft side of velcro, the rattles are all gone!

The system is now in and  running great. I still have a few bugs to work out. The FM tuner didn't work so, I'm scratching that idea and will go with a xm radio with computer control. The 7.1 screen works good at 640 but not easy to see with anything higher.

Now for some install pics

Everything is tucked in behind the glove box. When the glove box is closed, you can't see a thing. This part of the install was tight but, went in just fine.

The white box above the computer is the receiver for the wireless key board which I keep behind the passenger seat using velcro.

 Update to the install
After viewing these pictures on line, I knew I needed to hide some wires so tonight, (3/8/06) I went in and used some loom. Now, this looks like an easy task but, this stuff just don't want to work very well.

Not bad hua?

And here's why it's all worth doing.

The main reason for doing this setup was to have real time GPS without using a laptop. It's great knowing where you are and what route to take to get there.

OH, and a little music video. What's the song? Come on, you ole' guys know...

That's about it! More to follow later. XM, OBD to name a few.

UPDATE!

WOW. The main reason to have a carputer is XM satellite. You would not believe how much fun it is to have xm radio. Now, take it to another level where you have programed buttons to change channels, and those buttons update telling you what songs are playing. Along with the full list of channels and what or who is on each channel.

Here's a couple of screen shots..

Oh, and what was the price?
